Greetings
from Orlando!
The
DSO's performance at Bob Carr Auditorium was another huge success!
The
house was packed with a most appreciative audience.
They were also very responsive to MotorCity Triptych.
I'm
sure Michael Daugherty was pleased, as his father drove down from
South Carolina to be here last night.
The
concert's presenter, OCCA, hosted a nice post-concert reception for
the Orchestra and the audience last night.
It turned out to be the OCCA founder's 80th birthday. He and
Neeme Järvi both made some nice remarks.
We're
now off to Sarasota!

"I attended the Orlando show on January 20 with my two
daughters and friend (first symphony experience for
all three of them). WHAT A SHOW!!! Simply
breathtaking!"

"I flew across
the country to join a friend, another longtime DSO fan, in Orlando
for the local concert [on Jan. 20]. Be assured that all my
expectations for a glorious evening were met and even
surpassed. The stellar virtuosity of your superb musicians in
challenging repertoire, both established and new, was amply proven
as was the social affability and kind generosity of these artists in
the reception that followed. Many thanks for a sublime
memory."

During
intermission, bassist Larry
Hutchinson let school children feel the vibrations
his bass makes when played.

Approximately
thirty-five fourth and fifth grade students were winners of an essay
contest on the subject of “Why I would like to attend a Symphony
Orchestra Concert.” As a prize, the students were invited to the DSO concert,
along with a parent and their teacher. The students came backstage
at intermission to meet members of the Orchestra, as well as
composer Michael Daugherty, whose piece they had just heard.

"I
have been a DSO fan for years, due for the most part, to its many
recordings, especially those made during the Paul Paray era.
Rarely have I
heard a symphony concert as inspired and secure at the DSO’s
performance last Saturday at Bob Carr Hall in Orlando.
I’m not sure I’ve ever heard brass playing so polished
and thoroughly professional. The
whole concert was a sonic and musical delight.
Hats off to Maestro Järvi and his splendid musicians.
I
also attended the reception held afterwards, where it was my
pleasure to meet several of the orchestra members and Michael
Daugherty. Without
exception they were cordial, friendly, and full of good humor and
musical information. This
DSO event has become one of the highlights of my life.
Thanks
for coming to Florida. Please
come back again very soon."

Composer-in-Residence, Michael Daugherty
signed autographs
for students who asked him questions
about being a composer.
They also asked him how tall he
was and if he had been to Disney
