Artistic Administrator
Responsible for artistic planning and programming with the Music Director; execution and administration of artistic plans, including negotiation and booking of guest artists and conductors.
RESPONSIBILITIES
· Initiate and formulate short-range and long-range classical programs and artistic products with the Music Director including the coordination of programming with guest conductors, soloists and ensembles for the DSO. Design concert repertoire, special concert plans, tours and recording repertoire.
· Communicate all classical program information internally in a timely manner. Work closely with the library, personnel office, operations personnel and stage and production personnel to communicate all necessary information for planning and execution of programs.
· Arrange for the engagement and negotiation of fees for guest artists and contracting.
· Monitor and participate in the execution of artistic plans.
· Search for new classical artists for possible appearance with the DSO. Keep abreast of existing and emerging artistic talents and repertoire.
· Advise on the commissioning of new music and search for new compositions. Oversee negotiation of contracts for commissions by the DSO.
· Advise on artists and repertoire for broadcasting, recording, television and other electronic media products; participate in the planning of projects.
· Prepare and oversee artistic budgets. Administer budgets relating to the Music Director, staff conductors and guest artists.
· Supervise the logistical follow-up as it relates to Music Director, guest conductors and visiting artists, including visas, hotels, transportation, rehearsal orders, rehearsal and performance schedules, post concert entertainment, etc.
· Responsible for the casting of vocal and choral works, and for ensuring that choruses are effectively prepared before appearing with the DSO.
· Work closely with the Popular and Community Program Administrator to ensure processes, communication, and artistic quality are ensured across all product lines and all programs
· Work closely with the Marketing staff, as well as the Music Director, to design programs that have strong audience appeal and fit the revenue goals of the organization and subscription package designs, while upholding the artistic integrity and excellence of the DSO.
· Work closely with the Operations staff to ensure the coordination of rehearsal and performance schedules within the guidelines outlined in the musicians' union contract.
· Promote positive DSO artist relations.
· Responsible for staffing cover conductors.
· Act as management liaison for the Orchestra Artistic Advisory Committee.
· Prepare and communicate appropriate information about artists and concerts to other departments as required. Proofread all DSO PR/marketing materials about artists and programs prior to publication.
· Entertain guest artists.
· Assists with formulating long-range artistic plans.
· Communicate to conductors DSO practices and personnel issues.
· Represent DSO in the local, national and international music communities; as needed; be available to address DSO volunteers and support groups.
· Supervise artistic staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree in music or equivalent experience and minimum three years work experience in artistic administration in a symphony orchestra or similar musical organization.
Extensive and in-depth knowledge of the classical symphonic repertoire and a strong knowledge of current artists and conductors is required. Must know symphonic, vocal, and choral repertoires.
Knowledge of recital and chamber music repertoire preferred.
Ability to identify artistic quality and demonstrate innovative thinking in project planning
Must have, or be able to rapidly develop, widespread contacts in the classical music field, and to develop and sustain professional relationships and collaborate internally and externally for the benefit of the organization
Must be able to work with artists and their managers. Proven negotiation and contract management skills are essential.
Demonstrated management and organizational skills, including the ability to manage budgets, control costs and meet goals.
Imagination, patience, ability to work under pressure, well-developed critical thinking, problem solving and project planning skills, strong attention to detail with demonstrable ability to multi-task and execute plans effectively in fast paced environment.
Confidentiality, discretion and the ability to work well with and interact successfully with artists of international stature is essential.
Must be able to work long hours and a flexible schedule which includes ability to provide weekend and evening concert coverage as needed in addition to business day responsibilities.
Professional manager level desktop computing proficiency. Skills in MSOffice functions required. Facility with databases a plus.
