We are on MySpace!

DETROIT, (August 18, 2006) - The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has announced the launch of a new MySpace Web page (www.myspace.com/detroitsymphonyorchestra). The Web page offers a younger generation the chance to learn more about the DSO through a medium they are especially familiar with, the Internet. The page is also geared to youths who participate in DSO educational programs, including more than 500 children enrolled in the Detroit Symphony Civic Youth Ensembles and 75,000 metro Detroit area students that benefit from other DSO educational outreach programs. These initiatives include DSO musicians teaching in area schools, the DSO partnership with the Detroit School of Arts, as well as the DSO Educational Concert Series, the Young People's Concert Series and more.

As one of the most popular sites for young people ages 12-25, MySpace is an online social networking service, allowing users to share messages, interests and photos with friends. Users can send emails, post videos, listen to music and write blogs. The site also includes classified ads and posting of events. Currently one of the top ten Internet sites in the world with over 94 million users, MySpace was founded in 2003 by Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe. In 2005, the Web site was purchased by News Corporation (the parent company of Fox Broadcasting) for $580 million.

Created by the DSO marketing staff, the Orchestra's Web page features what every other "band" site includes: pictures, slideshows, links to the DSO's Web site, as well as the Orchestra roster, influences, and a description of the Orchestra's sound. Also featured are the Orchestra's upcoming shows, a blog, an 'about' section, and a list of the DSO's "friends," (other individuals or groups with MySpace pages) including Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, the Detroit Lions, DSO percussionist Ian Ding, Peabo Bryson, Marvin Winans and piano sensation Lang Lang, who performs at the DSO's season opener September 7 through 10. Changing daily, the site will eventually showcase music, blogs and the continuing concerts throughout the year. It will also provide access to the activities of a great orchestra on an easy-to-use Web site, featuring information on auditions, internships, educational programs, recordings and more.
