DUTOIT CONDUCTS SCHEHERAZADE
DETROIT, (October 6, 2008) - One of the world's legendary conductors and a favorite of both Detroit Symphony Orchestra musicians and audiences, Maestro Charles Dutoit, returns to Detroit to conduct Dutoit's Scheherazade, a blockbuster program of orchestral masterpieces. These concerts, part of the Buick Preferred Classical Series, feature Rimsky-Korsakov's beloved Scheherazade, Prokofiev's knuckle-busting Piano Concerto No. 2 with Chinese pianist Yuja Wang as the soloist and an orchestral version of Debussy's Petite Suite.

Bright Sheng returns this fall to conduct the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in two performances of Suite No. 2 from Romeo & Juliet taking place in Orchestra Hall on Friday, October 17 at 10:45 a.m. and Saturday, October 18 at 8:30 p.m. The centerpiece of the concerts is Suite No. 2 from Sergei Prokofiev's ballet based on Shakespeare's tragic tale of star-crossed lovers, Romeo & Juliet.

DETROIT, (September 26, 2008) - The Detroit Symphony Orchestra launches a new season of World Music this fall with a melodic voyage to the Middle East showcasing virtuoso musician Simon Shaheen and his ensemble Qantara. Internationally acclaimed for his mastery of the oud and violin, Shaheen joins the DSO to perform the World Premiere of his brand new composition commissioned by the DSO, Concerto No. 1 for Oud and Orchestra.
THE GERMAN CONNECTION
DETROIT, (September 19, 2008) - Former Detroit Symphony Orchestra Music Director Günther Herbig makes a triumphant return to Motown, reuniting with the Orchestra to conduct works by three of his German countrymen. The Brahms & Bruch concerts take place Thursday, October 9 at 8 p.m.; Friday, October 10 at 10:45 a.m.; and Saturday, October 11 at 8:30 p.m. in Orchestra Hall. The program opens with the Overture to the beloved opera Oberon by Carl Maria von Weber followed by Max Bruch's most famous work, his Violin Concerto No. 1, as performed by prodigious Chinese violinist Tianwa Yang. The program concludes with a grand performance of Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 1.
THE FUTURE OF CLASSICAL MUSIC
DETROIT (September 19, 2008) - The young people of the Sphinx Chamber Orchestra (SCO), comprised of the top alumni of the national Sphinx Competition for young Black and Latino string players, are posed to take the Orchestra Hall stage by storm on the Detroit leg of their first-ever National Tour. The all-African American and Latino ensemble performs Sunday, October 12 at 2 p.m. in a performance led by Chelsea Tipton II and co-presented by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the University Musical Society (UMS).
HE'S STILL GOT IT
DETROIT, (September 19, 2008) - It is only fitting that the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's Bank of America Paradise Jazz Series, named after a legendary jazz theater, should kick-off its 2008-09 season with an undisputed icon of the genre, pianist Dave Brubeck. One of the most influential jazz artists of all time with over six decades of performing under his belt, Brubeck returns to Orchestra Hall for a one-night-only performance on Thursday, October 16 at 8 p.m.
MAGNIFICENT MARSALIS
DETROIT, (September 12, 2008) - Nine-time Grammy Award-winning jazz legend Wynton Marsalis and his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will team up with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for a premiere of Marsalis' new piece, Two in 3, on Saturday, September 27 at 8:30 p.m. in Orchestra Hall. The piece will have another premiere three days prior, on September 24, at the Wharton Center in East Lansing where JLCO and Marsalis will perform the piece with the MSU Symphony Orchestra.

DETROIT, (September 12, 2008) -The Detroit Symphony Orchestra kicks off its 2008-09 DTE Energy Foundation Pops Series with a show that will bring Bourbon Street to the heart of Motown. Louis Armstrong's New Orleans is a tribute to the great city's one-of-a-kind musical style and the legendary artist that made it famous. The DSO performances feature trumpet virtuoso Byron Stripling taking on the legendary trumpeter's songbook which has become the soundtrack of The Big Easy.

DETROIT, (September 5, 2008) - The Detroit Symphony Orchestra's ever-popular Resident Conductor Thomas Wilkins returns to Detroit later this month to lead his first concerts of 2008-09, Wilkins & Sibelius, marking his ninth season with the DSO. Wilkins, who was recently named Principal Guest Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in Los Angeles, leads the DSO in this two-concert series that includes Leonard Bernstein's Candide Suite; Reinhold Glière's Horn Concerto featuring the DSO's Principal French Horn Karl Pituch as soloist; and Jean Sibelius' heroic Symphony No. 2.

DETROIT, (August 28, 2008) - Robert deMaine , the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's celebrated principal cellist, is set to put his own thumbprint on one of Robert Schumann's boldest works, the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in A minor. The virtuoso joins the DSO and Norwegian conductor Arild Remmereit for a concert series that also includes Hjalarljod (Joyful Shout) by Remmereit's countryman Eivind Groven and the innovative Symphony in D minor by César Franck.
