DSO'S "CLASSICAL ROOTS" CONCERTS PRESENT REGINA CARTER
IN WORLD PREMIERE OF BILLY CHILDS' VIOLIN CONCERTO

"Classical Roots" Gala Celebrates 10th Anniversary,Honors Composer Olly Wilson
DETROIT, (December 7, 2009) - Detroit native, MacArthur Fellow and world-renowned jazz violinist Regina Carter will give the World Premiere of a Violin Concerto written by William "Billy" Childs, the Grammy Award-winning composer and jazz pianist who received a Guggenheim Fellowship last spring. The work will be one of three compositions by contemporary African-American composers to be performed at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's 2010 "Classical Roots" concerts, which take place on Fri., Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. and Sat., Jan. 30 at 8:30 p.m. in Orchestra Hall at the Max M. Fisher Music Center. Conducted by DSO Music Director Leonard Slatkin, the program will also include Lumina by celebrated composer Olly Wilson, and Beyond Rivers of Vision by James Lee III, a 34-year-old native of St. Joseph, Michigan. Additionally, the Brazeal Dennard Chorale, directed by Augustus Hill, will sing a set of a-cappella selections, and the performances will open with "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," by John Rosamond Johnson and James Weldon Johnson.

John Williams Violin Concerto Has DSO Premiere
DETROIT, (December 11, 2009) - The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO), Music Director Leonard Slatkin and Concertmaster Emmanuelle Boisvert present a program featuring composers of three diverse periods in musical history, with a work by a living composer experiencing its DSO premiere, in Beethoven's "Eroica." Performances also include music by 17th century composer Henry Purcell (transcribed in the 20th century by Benjamin Britten) and John Williams, who is better known for his popular film scores. Concerts take place on Thursday, January 14 at 8:00 p.m.; Friday, January 15 at 10:45 a.m.; Saturday, January 16 at 8:30 p.m.; and Sunday, January 17 at 3:00 p.m.

DETROIT, (Dec., 11, 2009) - Feel the magic of 1940's swing era music and ring in the New Year with the DSO as they team up with conductor Jeff Tyzik, vocalist Steve Lippia, trombonist Jim Pugh and percussionist Dave Mancini to bring the velvety smooth hits of Frank Sinatra and the big band sound of Tommy Dorsey to the stage in Swingin' with Sinatra and Dorsey. The performances, part of the DTE Energy Foundation Pops Series, take place Thurs., Jan. 7 at 10:45 a.m. and 8 p.m.; Fri., Jan. 8 at 8:30 p.m.; Sat., Jan. 9 at 8:30 p.m.; and Sun., Jan. 10 at 3 p.m. in Orchestra Hall.

Holiday Favorites and New Classics Will Be Celebrated with Music, Song and Dance
DETROIT, (Dec. 4, 2009) - The DSO and conductor Thomas Wilkins welcome the Holiday Season with the annual Home for the Holidays Pops Concerts. Part of the DTE Energy Foundation Pops Series, these performances are family-friendly, heartwarming and capture the essence of the season by featuring familiar holiday tunes as well as engaging new melodies over the course of six celebratory and joyful performances. Joining Maestro Wilkins and the orchestra are guest soprano and Detroit native Kisma Jordan, the combined choral forces of the Andover High School Choir and the Grosse Pointe South High School Pointe Singers, the Andover High School "Jills" and the Grosse Pointe South Santa Tappers. Performances take place in Orchestra Hall on Thurs., Dec. 17 at 10:45 a.m. & 8 p.m.; Fri., Dec. 18 at 8:30 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 19 at 3 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.; and Sun., Dec. 20 at 3 p.m. Other attractions include a holiday Lego display of landmark Detroit buildings along with holiday refreshments in The Music Box.


COME SWING IN THE HOLIDAY SEASON WITH THE PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND'S "CREOLE CHRISTMAS"
DETROIT, (Dec. 4, 2009) - The Big Easy's musical treasure, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, swings into Orchestra Hall on Tues., Dec. 15 at 8 p.m. with a Creole Christmas. Part of the Bank of America Paradise Jazz Series, this annual must-see production for New Orleans families was begun in 2005, and 2009 marks the first year this venerable group has taken their infectious holiday spirit on the road. Seasonal favorites will be performed as well as jazz classics such as Basin St. Blues, Bourbon Street Parade and What a Friend We have in Jesus.

DSO Hosts Student Piano Competition; Five Winners Perform with Conductor Charles Burke
And Civic Orchestra in Free Family Holiday Concert
DETROIT, (Dec. 4, 2009) - Student pianists who have always dreamed of performing on Orchestra Hall stage will now have that opportunity this holiday season. Between October and November, the DSO's Music Director Leonard Slatkin and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Civic Youth Education department, in conjunction with an advisory council made up of regional piano teachers, hosted a talent search for the second year in a row. Middle school piano students were invited to compete for a coveted spot performing with the Detroit Civic Youth Orchestra (CYO), the most advanced of the DSO's Civic Youth Ensembles (CYE), in a Free Civic Holidays family holiday concert conducted by Charles Burke, Director of Education and Artistic Director of Civic Ensembles on Saturday, December 12 at 11 a.m.

DETROIT, (Nov. 25, 2009) - The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) announced today that conductor Andrew Litton will replace Music Director Leonard Slatkin on the upcoming concert, The Planets. Guest artist David Krakauer is still scheduled to appear at these concerts featuring the world premiere of Wlad Marhulets' Concerto for Klezmer Clarinet as well as Gustav Holst's The Planets. Mahulets will be in attendance for these performances to provide insights into his work. Performances take place on Thur. Dec. 10 at 8:00 pm; Fri., Dec.11 at 8:00 p.m.; Sat., Dec.12 at 8:30 p.m.; and Sun., Dec. 13 at 3 p.m. in Orchestra Hall.

Leonard Slatkin Returns to United States Following Treatment in the Netherlands
DETROIT, (Nov. 12, 2009) - The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) announced today that conductor Andrew Grams will replace Music Director Leonard Slatkin on the upcoming concerts, La Mer and Young People's concert, South of the Border while Arild Remmereit will replace Maestro Slatkin on the Kalichstein Plays Mozart concerts. Guest artists Michel Camilo and Joseph Kalichstein are still scheduled to appear at these concerts.


DU YUN NAMED WINNER OF ANNUAL ELAINE LEBENBOM MEMORIAL AWARD FOR FEMALE COMPOSERS
DSO announces new partnership with Ucross Foundation
DETROIT, (Nov. 4, 2009) - Du Yun, an internationally acclaimed composer, has been awarded the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's (DSO) Fourth Annual Elaine Lebenbom Memorial Award for Female Composers. Du Yun, who was chosen from over 50 applicants from the United States, China, Korea, Israel, Austria and the United Kingdom, will compose a new work that will receive its world premiere in the DSO's 2010-2011 classical subscription series. In addition to performances of her work, Du Yun will receive a $10,000 prize and a one-month residency at the Ucross Foundation, an internationally known artist's retreat located on the High Plains in northern Wyoming. The Foundation is the DSO's new partner in recognizing and awarding exceptional female composers.

The performances include the DSO Premiere of Pēteris Vasks' Musica Dolorosa for String Orchestra, Barber's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6, also known as Pathétique. DETROIT, (Oct. 12, 2009) - Enjoy sweet musical treats with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) during Macy's Super Saturdays on Sat., Oct. 31. This family series, offered throughout the Max M. Fisher Music Center is a half-day of activities with doors opening at 9:30 a.m. designed to introduce children to the wonders of music with two concert performances, a Marshall Music instrument petting zoo in addition to arts and crafts. The Henry Ford II Fund Tiny Tots Series: Rock O'Ween with Candy Band performance, featuring rock-infused children's songs, begins at 10 a.m. in The Music Box, lasts approximately 45 minutes and is recommended for ages 0-6. The MASCO Corporation Foundation Young People's Concerts: Thrills and Chills IV - A Halloween Special, led by DSO Conducting Assistant Charles Greenwell, features a stimulating introduction to classical music and begins at 11 a.m. in Orchestra Hall. DETROIT, (Sept. 30, 2009) -The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) welcomes back Principal Guest Conductor Peter Oundjian to the podium with his first DSO performance of the 2009-10 season in Oundjian & Mahler. The program features Beethoven's Overture to Fidelio, Wagner's Prelude and "Liebestod" from Tristan und Isolde and Mahler's Symphony No. 7. DETROIT, (Sept. 23, 2009) - Come see up to 26 Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) performances for only $99 with the purchase of a Friday Night Club subscription. This one-time $99 fee allows subscribers to reserve tickets to any Friday night classical, pops, or jazz concert at Orchestra Hall during the 2009-10 season. DSO AND LEONARD SLATKIN PRESENT THREE WORKS BY SAMUEL BARBER WITH TRIBUTE PERFORMANCE TO AMERICAN COMPOSER IN ORCHESTRA HALL

DETROIT, (Sept. 16, 2009) - The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO), Music Director Leonard Slatkin, Detroit native and pianist James Tocco as well as DSO's Principal Cellist Robert deMaine and Principal Violist Alexander Mishnaevski bring together three pieces by Barber paired with the music of Richard Strauss in Barber's Adagio & Don Quixote. The performances, the first in a lineup of concerts to celebrate the 100th birthday of Barber, will take place on Thurs., Oct. 1 at 8 p.m.; Fri., Oct. 2 at 10:45 a.m.; and Sat., Oct. 3 at 8:30 p.m. in Orchestra Hall. DETROIT, (August 31, 2009) - The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) and Music Director Leonard Slatkin present a week of free concerts with the DSO Community Series: Your DSO in Your Community from Sept. 14-18 and a special DSO Open House on Sept. 20.

Your DSO in Your Community offers performances on Mon., Sept. 14 at 10:45 a.m. and 8 p.m. at Seligman Performing Arts Center located at 22305 W. 13 mile, Beverly Hills; Tues., Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center located at 15801 Michigan Ave., Dearborn; Thurs., Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center located at 1627 W. Fort St., Detroit; and Fri., Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. at the Detroit School of Arts located at 123 Selden St., right behind the Max M. Fisher Music Center, Detroit. DETROIT, (August 31, 2009) -The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) presents an exciting 2009-10 season family series with Macy's Super Saturdays @ the DSO. Each Saturday includes arts and crafts for children, the Marshal Music petting zoo as well as the MASCO Corporation Foundation Young People's Concerts (YPC) and The Henry Ford II Fund Tiny Tots Series. Performances for both YPC and Tiny Tots take place on Sat., Oct. 31, Nov. 21, Dec. 19 and Mar. 13 with an additional FREE bonus concert featuring Leonard Slatkin and the DSO's Civic Orchestra on Dec. 12. DETROIT, (August 19, 2009) - The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) makes its recording debut on the Naxos label on Aug. 25 with Michael Daugherty's Fire & Blood. Led by Music Director Emeritus Neeme Järvi and highlighting guest violinist Ida Kavafian as well as percussionist Brian Jones, this recording celebrates three works commissioned and premiered by the DSO during Daugherty's four years as Composer-in-Residence, including Fire & Blood (2003) for violin and orchestra, MotorCity Triptch (2002) and Raise the Roof (2003) for timpani and orchestra.

DETROIT, (August 19, 2009) - E1 Music will release the new compact disc The Melody of Rhythm: Triple Concerto and Music for Trio on Aug. 25. Recorded live in Orchestra Hall in Jan. 2009, this disc features the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) and Music Director Leonard Slatkin, along with internationally-renowned virtuosi and composers Béla Fleck, banjo; Edgar Meyer, double bass; and Zakir Hussain, tabla.

DSO ANNOUNCES FOURTH ANNUAL ELAINE LEBENBOM COMPETITION
- Memorial Award Continues in Spirit of Recognizing New Orchestral Works by Women
DETROIT, (Apr. 29, 2009) -The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is accepting entries for its fourth annual Elaine Lebenbom Memorial Competition for Women Composers. The international competition, launched in 2006, is the only annual symphony orchestra sponsored award granted annually to a living female composer, of any age or nationality. Each year, one winner receives a $10,000 prize and the opportunity to have her original work premiered in the DSO's Classical Subscription Series. The award is made possible by an anonymous donor. LEONARD SLATKIN TO CONDUCT RECORDING OF JOHN CORIGLIANO SCORE FOR MEL GIBSON THRILLER, THE EDGE OF DARKNESS
DETROIT, (Apr. 6, 2009) - Leonard Slatkin will be in London this week, recording the soundtrack for the upcoming film starring Mel Gibson, "Edge of Darkness." The score is being written by Slatkin's long time friend, John Corigliano. Their collaborations have extended back more than 30 years. Mr. Slatkin recorded the composer's First Symphony, which won a Grammy in 1996. Most recently, a recording of Corigliano's "Dylan Thomas Trilogy" has been issued on Naxos Records, with the Nashville Symphony and chorus. Mr. Slatkin performed Corigliano's 3rd Symphony with the DSO last season, and next season he will collaborate with Sir James Galway in a performance of "The Pied Piper Fantasy."

DETROIT, (Mar. 9, 2009) - Prepare to celebrate the ancient art form of bellydancing as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) welcomes the Bellydance Superstars, an American dance troupe, to the stage for one performance on Sun., Mar. 29 at 3 p.m. In addition, international performer and instructor Lana Mini of Detroit Bellydance will lead a free bellydance workshop and demonstration in the Music Box at 1:30 p.m. prior to the afternoon show.

DETROIT, (Mar. 9, 2009) - Orchestral Hall will be awash in the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas Mar. 19-22 as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) swaggers with the favorite songs of Sin City. Guest artists include Jack Everly, Joe Cassidy, Martin Preston, Allison Briner, Scott Beck, Jennifer Ladner and Anne Beck along with appearances by local dancers Blair Marion Parkman and Lydia Porter. Featured music includes such hits as Luck Be A Lady, Big Spender, Here's to Las Vegas, New York, New York and I Go to Rio. POPULAR PIANIST JEREMY DENK PUTS STAMP ON BEETHOVEN'S CONCERTO NO. 1
DETROIT, (Mar. 4, 2009) - The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) continues its celebration of Beethoven's piano concerti with Beethoven & Debussy featuring young pianist Jeremy Denk offering a fresh take on the composer's Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major. Conducted by audience and orchestra favorite Sir Andrew Davis, the performances include Elgar's Serenade for Strings in E minor, Debussy's Prélude à l'Après-midi d'un faune (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun) and Stravinsky's Symphony in Three Movements and take place Thu., Mar. 12 at 8 p.m.; Sat., Mar. 14 at 8:30 p.m.; and Sun., Mar. 15 in Orchestra Hall.
