Bass Trombone

Randall Hawes has been bass trombonist of the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra since 1985. He was born in St. Joseph, Mich., raised in
Battle Creek and received a Bachelor of Music Education from Central
Michigan University. Prior to joining the DSO, he was a member of the
Kalamazoo Symphony, the Woody Herman Orchestra and the Tanglewood
Festival Orchestra. He has also performed with the Saginaw, Midland,
Boston, Pittsburgh and Chicago orchestras.
In 1995, Hawes was invited by Sir Georg Solti to Musicians du Monde
Orchestra in Geneva, Switzerland to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of
the United Nations. He joined Maestro Valery Gergiev and the World
Orchestra for Peace for a world tour in August 2005. He is a lecturer
at Northwestern University, enjoys chamber music and collaborates
whenever possible with Music of the Baroque, Chicago Musicians and
Summit Brass.
Hawes collaborated with Ann Arbor pianist Kathryn Goodson for his CD
“Melodrama,” which features Russian music for bass trombone and piano
and was recorded in Orchestra Hall, the home of the DSO. He is also a
member of CutTime Players, an octet comprised of DSO musicians.
