CYE Audition Information
Membership into the Civic Youth Ensembles is by audition only. All interested musicians must audition, regardless of previous association with Civic Youth Ensembles. To schedule an audition, complete the online application. The online application is now available.
The 2011-2012 Application is CLOSED.
Applications for 2012-13 will open in the Spring.
Auditions for the 2011-2012 season will be held
in May and June 2011.

*All auditions are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Once your submitted application has been received, the CYE Staff will assign an audition date and time.*
AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
CIVIC ORCHESTRA
Requirements for our most advanced full orchestra include:
- Specific excerpts
- One solo work
- Possible sight-reading
PHILHARMONIC AND SINFONIA ORCHESTRAS
Requirements for our most advanced full orchestra include:
- Three contrasting solos (ex: varying sections or movements within a concerto, or differing solos)
- Major/minor/chromatic scales
- Possible sight-reading
STRING ORCHESTRA
Requirements for our beginning string-only orchestras include:
- Two contrasting solos
- Major/minor/chromatic scales
- Possible sight-reading
CIVIC JAZZ ORCHESTRA and CIVIC JAZZ BAND 1
Requirements for our more advanced jazz big bands include:
- Specific Excerpts - Prepare "Little Pixie"
- Major/minor/chromatic/ jazz scales
- Possible sight-reading
- DRUMMERS: Demonstration of various rhythmic patterns such as bossa nova, mambo, cha cha, 6/8, 3/4 and swing at different tempi
JAZZ BAND 2
Requirements for the entry level jazz band include:
- Major/minor/chromatic/jazz scales
- Possible sight-reading
- Demonstation of improvisation over different time signatures in a variety of styles is highly encouraged
- DRUMMERS: Demonstration of various rhythmic patterns such as bossa nova, mambo, cha cha, 6/8, 3/4 and swing at different tempi is highly encouraged.
- Performance ability on multiple instruments is encouraged if applicable (ex: saxophone and clarinet).
CIVIC JAZZ COMBOS AND IMPROVISATION CLASSES
Students will be placed in combos or improvisation classes based upon their audition for the Jazz Bands. All students must audition for the jazz bands to be considered for these classes.
WIND SYMPHONY
Requirements for our advanced level wind-band include:
- Three contrasting solos (ex. varying sections or movements within a concerto, or differing solos)
- Major/minor/chromatic scales
- Possible sight-reading

AUDITIONS CHECKLIST
q Choose ensemble(s) for audition
- Please select all ensembles for which you would like to be considered.
- If all three full orchestras are indicated, materials for Civic Orchestra are required.
- If Wind Symphony and Civic Orchestra are indicated, materials for Civic Orchestra are required. Auditioning for Wind Symphony and Philharmonic/Sinfonia Orchestras do not require excerpts.

q Receive audition information
- After sending the application in, audition information will be sent via e-mail, including audition date, time, and place.
- Due to the number of applicants, we cannot honor scheduling requests.
qAudition
- Musicians should bring two photocopies of each solo work for the adjudicators.
- All percussion candidates must bring their own sticks and mallets. (A marimba will not be available for percussion auditions.)
- All musicians should arrive at least 20 minutes before scheduled audition times.
qResults
- Audition results will be sent via email during the summer months.
- Please note that ALL audition results are final.
