 Civic Auditions

Membership into the Civic Youth Ensembles is by audition only. All interested musicians must audition, regardless of previous association with Civic Youth Ensembles. To schedule an auditon,complete the online application at:  www.detroitsymphony.com/civic


Auditions for the 2010-2011 season are now closed.  Please check this website in the Winter of 2011 for more information on auditioning for the 2011-2012 season.

 
FULL ORCHESTRA AUDITIONS
In order to qualify for placement in the three full orchestras, students must prepare specific excerpts and one solo work. 


STRING ORCHESTRA AUDITIONS
Prepare two solos of contrasting style, major/minor/chromatic scales and expect sight-reading.


JAZZ AUDITIONS

Students must prepare excerpts and be prepared to play major/minor/chromatic/jazz scales and sight-reading.   Demonstrating ability to improvise over different time signatures in a variety of styles and/or double on other instruments is a plus.  Drummers should be able to lay down various rhythmic patterns such as bossa nova, mambo, cha cha, 6/8, 3/4 and swing at different tempi.


WIND SYMPHONY AUDITIONS

Prepare two solos of contrasting style, major/minor/chromatic scales and expect sight-reading.

AUDITIONS CHECKLIST

q Choose ensemble(s) for which you would like to audition

Let the descriptions of the groups and ensemble's corresponding audition excerpts guide you and your private teacher in this decision. Please indicate on the application any group you may be interested in participating in. If you check all three full orchestras, you must audition with the material for the highest-level orchestra. If you check Wind Symphony and an orchestra, the excerpts for the orchestra will be sufficient audition material.


 

q Fill out application

You can fill out the online application.  (Note: The online application is unavailable as auditions for the 2010-2011 season are closed, you will be able to apply again in the Winter of 2011 for the 2011-2012 season.)

 

q Pay $15 application fee

This non-refundable fee can be paid online upon completing your application.  If you are unable to pay this fee, please include a statement of need in your application, where indicated.

q Receive audition packet from CYE

2-3 weeks after sending in your application, you will receive a packet of audition information in the mail, including your audition date, time, and place. Due to the number of applicants, we cannot honor scheduling requests.


 

qAudition

Musicians should bring 2 photocopies of any solo work for the adjudicators. All percussion candidates must bring their own sticks and mallets. We will not be able to provide a marimba for the percussion auditions. All musicians should arrive at least 20 minutes before their scheduled audition times.


 

qReceive results by email

Audition results will be sent out by email during the summer months.  Please note that ALL audition results are final.
